National War Memorial

India Gate, New Delhi
Architect Plural Design Consultants
Scope Project narrative and theme Concept Design The memorial aligns itself spatially along the ceremonial axis of Lutyen’s New Delhi from the Raisina Hill to the India Gate and beyond, and responds to the possibility of reinterpreting the distance India has travelled to its current self. It is in this possibility that the memorial finds its bearings, and manifests its meaning. The design for the memorial seeks to embody the new meanings and ideals it represents as an overlay on the history and form of the erstwhile plan. The formality is viewed as an opportunity to celebrate the overlaying of meanings. The memorial sets itself as a linear inclined plane. Emerging from a recess within the earth, the plane stretches out to its surface, and rises to the beyond.
